What Are Cataracts?
As we age, proteins inside the lens of the eye begin to clump together. This causes the lens to become cloudy. That clouding of the lens is called a cataract. Cataracts are a common age-related vision problem that almost everyone develops as they get older. According to the CDC, cataracts are the most frequent cause of age-related loss of vision in the world.
As this cloudiness progresses, it begins to affect the ability of the lens to bend or refract light. The result is blurred, hazy, and/or discolored vision. People with cataracts often describe it as trying to view the world through a foggy window.
How Does Cataract Surgery Work?
Fortunately, cataracts can be effectively treated through cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most common medical procedures performed in the U.S. Many patients experience better vision after the procedure than they did before developing cataracts.
Cataract removal surgery is an outpatient procedure that takes about 15-45 minutes to complete. During the procedure, the cloudy natural lens is removed through a small incision and replaced with an intraocular lens implant. Most patients can resume their normal activities within a day or two of the surgery.
What Are Intraocular Lenses?
Vision-correcting lens implants provide patients the option of correcting their nearsightedness or farsightedness as a part of their cataract surgery. Traditional intraocular lenses (IOLs) are fixed, meaning their power can’t be adjusted once they’ve been implanted. This limitation can be problematic if a patient’s vision changes over time, often necessitating the use of glasses or contact lenses to achieve clear vision.
The RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) eliminates this problem. Unlike traditional fixed lenses, the RxSight™ LAL can be adjusted and customized after implantation, so you and your doctor can fine-tune your vision to achieve the optimal prescription based on your unique needs and lifestyle after your eye has healed from surgery. This post-surgery adjustability significantly enhances the likelihood of achieving 20/20 vision or better without the need for additional corrective eyewear.
What Is the RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens?
Unlike traditional lenses that have a fixed power, the RxSight™ LAL is made of a special photosensitive material that can be adjusted in response to ultraviolet (UV) light. This unique feature means that your doctor can fine-tune the lens to your specific vision needs after it has been implanted and your eye has healed.
With the RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens, a patient’s prescription is applied directly to the lens after surgery rather than before. This allows for a higher degree of accuracy in achieving the desired visual outcome. The customization process involves the use of the Light Delivery Device (LDD), which delivers UV light to the lens to adjust its shape and power. This adjustment process takes about 90 seconds and typically requires 2-3 treatment sessions to achieve the optimal prescription.
Once the desired prescription strength is determined, a final UV light treatment is used to lock in the results. During the adjustment period, patients must wear special UV-blocking glasses to protect the lens from unintended changes caused by exposure to indoor and outdoor UV light.
The RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens offers a level of customization and precision that is unparalleled in traditional cataract surgery, giving patients the opportunity to achieve their best possible vision.
Patient Experience and Safety Information
While the RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens offers significant benefits, it is important to be aware of certain safety considerations:
- Light Treatment Schedule: Adherence to the light treatment schedule is essential for achieving the best visual outcome. Missing or delaying treatments can affect the final results.
- Potential Risks: As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with cataract surgery and IOL implantation, however serious adverse events related to UV light exposure are rare.
- Preexisting Conditions: Patients with certain preexisting eye conditions or those who experience complications during cataract surgery may not be suitable candidates for the LAL. Your doctor will evaluate your individual situation to determine if the LAL is the right choice for you.
- Medication Sensitivity: The LAL/LAL+ and LDD system should not be used if you are taking medications that increase your sensitivity to UV light or medications considered harmful to the retina.
- Compliance: Ensuring compliance with your doctor’s instructions regarding UV protective glasses and light treatments is critical to the success of the procedure.
FDA Reports Many Benefits of RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens
A 2017 FDA Summary Of Safety And Effectiveness determined there were many significant benefits to the RxSight™ Light Adjustable Lens for the correction of aphakia after cataract removal. It was also shown that the RxSight™ LAL system can reduce residual astigmatism, improving uncorrected visual acuity. Benefits were greatest in patients with higher amounts of astigmatism. The RxSight™ LAL system also reduces the likelihood of clinically significant residual spherical refractive errors.
