Dr. Thomas Marshall has been serving the eyes of Baytown and Southeast Texas for more than 30 years, first with the San Jacinto Regional Eye Center, and now as a member of the Berkeley Eye Center team. He concentrates now on small-incision cataract surgery with a variety of specialty lens implants including multifocal designs and toric implants for astigmatism. He also performs Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS).
Dr. Marshall is happy to speak Spanish with patients who so prefer. As a devoted Christian, he is also delighted to pray with any patients who wish. He has made missionary trips to Cuba, and medical missions to Zambia and Mexico.
He is a native Texan, growing up in Irving, where he was very active in the Boy Scouts. He earned his Eagle Scout rank at age 14 and served in numerous leadership posts. In the scouts, he developed a love for camping. He was assistant editor of his high school yearbook, and graduated Salutatorian before joining the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 1982.
Entering medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as the first physician in the family, he had no established specialty path chosen. During his studies, he discovered the wonder and beauty of the human eye, selecting a career in ophthalmology.
During his internship at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, he met the prettiest nurse in the hospital and married her. The two then travelled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His ophthalmology residency was at the prestigious Medical College of Wisconsin (formerly Marquette) Eye Institute. There he earned the Copeland Award for research on corneal endothelium. Exploring the Midwest was fun and different, but both eagerly returned to Texas to raise a family. They raised three daughters (all Aggies), and now enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.
In his time in Baytown, he has served with the Lions Club 25+ years. He has served Houston Methodist Baytown hospital as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Medical Staff. In 2020 he was added to the board of Houston Methodist Alliance for Quality, having been the first specialist physician selected for their panel. He is a Lifetime Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology following 35 years’ membership, and has been recognized as Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2010.
