Symblepharon
Symblepharon is a condition in which the eyelids become “stuck” to the eyeball as a result of scar tissue formation. It can affect the function of the eye and eyelid resulting in difficulty opening and closing the eyelids, reduced visual acuity and cosmetic disfigurement. At Berkeley Eye Center, our Houston oculoplastic surgeon provides patients with symblepharon a wide range of effective treatment options, including steroids, special contact lenses and oculoplastic surgical procedures.
How Do You Develop Symblepharon?
This condition can develop as a complication from an infection or trauma or from other medical conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid.
What Are Some of the Symptoms?
Common symptoms of this condition include:
- Inadequate lid opening or closure
- Tearing
- Foreign body sensation
- Ocular motility disorders
- Inward turning of the lashes
Treatment for Symblepharon
During the early stages of the disease, it may be possible to “split” the adhesions through the use of special contact lenses and other devices. Steroids and immunosuppressive therapy may also be recommended.
If symblepharon has already formed, then reconstructive procedures can be performed.
